Travel Thursday: Florence, August 2014

I started this on Instagram a few weeks ago and I’m really enjoying sharing little vignettes from various places I’ve been over the years for work or pleasure. Whenever I’ve travelled somewhere for work I’ve travelled with a story in mind, but often the stories I share afterwards with friends and family are never written down – the tales of near misses, strange events and even stranger people. They’re usually far more interesting than whatever I was intending to write about, and I rarely get a chance to write descriptively, so here goes. Every Thursday I’ll be sharing a picture and a brief story from somewhere

Michaelangelo's David

Michaelangelo’s David

We arrived from Lake Garda by train to bella Firenze and realised we’d have to see David that day as the museums were closed the following day. As we raced across the cobbles from the train station with our wheelie cases, thunder rolled and the heavens opened. Rounding the corner to the museum, we were confronted by an enormous, sopping queue… it took us almost an hour of waiting in the warm rain, drenched, with our suitcases, to see David. But he was worth it.

Imagine the faces of reception staff at the Four Seasons, when we showed up an hour later like two drowned rats, and hung our soaked clothes all over the antiques in our suite to dry…

Here’s the piece I wrote for the Sunday Business Post about our trip.
