Daniel’s story of being saved from suicide

We take a lot of unusual calls on the Opinion Line; everything from runaway swans to the most intense personal stories of love and loss. One particularly heartrending call we received, last thing on a Friday a few months ago, was from Daniel. He called because he wanted to thank a local Garda who had rescued him when he was standing by the water’s edge in Mahon, contemplating ending it all.

We’ve been shortlisted for a PPI Award on the basis of Daniel’s call. I spoke to him on Friday about it. He is doing well with the counsellor we organised for him, but says every day is different; there are good days and bad days.

There are no easy solutions but he asked for help and found it and we are very honoured that he chose to share his story with us.

You can listen back to Daniel’s story here.
